This popular walk is ideal for a winter’s Sunday morning – a chance to get out and enjoy the bush scenery away from the city noise and hustle with a bunch of friends.
Need a lift? Meet at Cnr, Riversdale & Glenferrie Roads Hawthorn at 8:30 AM sharp. (Please let Graham know if you require transport)
Meet: Picnic area off Mt Morton Rd, Belgrave Sth. Signposted Birdsland Reserve.
Parking: Park in car park, 200 meters in from main road along gravel road, just past the overflow carpark in Mt Morton Rd. Don’t park in the overflow car park, if possible.
This reserve is very popular, but parking space is usually OK. No fees to park.
The Walk:
Around Platypus Lake. Flat, paved path. Muddy in patches after rain, wear suitable shoes.
Then turn onto Dargon Track and start to climb – easy sloping track, but uphill all the way (which means downhill on the way back 😊), as far as Granite Track.
Finally, up Granite Track to Granite Peak, past lots of kangaroos lazing about in the sun (they’re always there!).
Return: same way, but downhill.
Distance:
Outbound: 3.3 km
Return: 3.3 km
Total: 6.6 km
Best views and resting place is at top of Granite Track (Granite Peak).
Time: Allow 2 hours
Toilets: At carpark at start
Difficulty: Moderate
Coffee: Upwey township or Upper Fern Tree Gully, on way home.
Features: Very popular walk
Beautiful, open nature reserve

Spectacular views towards city
No traffic, very family friendly.
